bullox, bullix, bollox?
Excuse me. I was born in 1959 and raised in Keokuk, Iowa. I feel a little... sheltered, perhaps ignorant.
For instance... our British Isles counterparts on this site sometimes use the expression bollox (with some variation of spelling).
Is this a direct translation for bovine feces (bullshit)?
Is this a direct translation for gluteus maximus (buttocks)?
I realize the common slang usage is nearly the same as 'bullshit' in American, but what is 'bullox' really? What does 'bullox' mean?

Correctly spelled "bollocks" and literally "testicles", but as you say in common usage it's derogotory abusive slang rather than discussing a body part.

"Bollocks" can be used in a number of different ways. One would be like "Bullshit" as "you are talking Bollocks". It can be used as a general expletive such as if you were to hit your hand with a hammer you might say "Bollocks", generally in the UK relates to "balls", testicles etc and is used very commonly.

yeah, that too! i use that term a lot because its much better than saying "fuck" all the time... and the people over here are so damn clueless about meanings of words that it really doesnt matter... almost like saying the term "bloody". thats a slang derogatory term as well i believe ( since people are hell bent on correcting me about stuff maybe you all can figure it out for yourselves at the oxford dictionary site or the wikipedia)

It is of course quite acceptable to say Bollex (16mm cine camera) and claim nothing derogatory was uttered.
Then there are alternatives, archies, plums, prunes, peaches, nuts, goolies (from which comes the joke the oodjimegoolie bird), pips, balls, Trossachs, urals, jewells, veg, orbs, scrote(s).
Isn't the English language wonderfull? We even let the rest of the world use it (Lights blue touch paper and retires to safety).

cobblers probably derives from cobbles (pardon the omission)

Yeah, "Bollocks" is definately quite an interesting word, you can spell it "Bollox" but in general it is spelt "Bollocks". I think Eddie Izzard does this whole sketch in "Dress to Kill"? Or possibly "Glorious" or "Circle" about the word bollocks and how it can be used. Quite funny.

Since we have started on bollocks there are more insults like gooch bag, but lets expand this with English phrases for the whole package like erm...
'meat and two veg' or the 'family jewels'... got any more anyone?
